About

CTRL+J is a series of conversations launched in 2025 to bring together key voices from around the world to discuss the relationship between Tech and Journalism in the Global South.

Examining homegrown solutions to sustain journalism amid technological disruption

CTRL+J is a collaboration between media associations and knowledge partners from Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa. In partnership with the International Fund for Public Interest Media, each organization is playing an active role in shaping and driving the agenda within their respective countries and regions.

Alongside the International Fund, Momentum – Journalism and Tech Task Force and the Digital Journalism Association (Ajor) co-hosted CTRL+J Latam. The Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI) and the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) are co-hosting CTRL+J APAC. CTRL+J Africa is co-hosted by GIBS Media Leadership Think Tank.

What is our Purpose?

CTRL+J Latam probes the unique challenges and opportunities facing journalism amid technological upheaval in Latin America. With Brazil’s current legislative debate and regional leadership on these issues, underlined by the presidency of the G20 in 2024, São Paulo provides a compelling locale for launching this dialogue. With a vibrant digital media ecosystem and an engaged civil society, debates around technology and journalism in Latam can inspire global conversations.

For decades, automation has played a role in shaping industries—from assembly lines to call centers. But this new wave, powered by AI and large language models, is different. It’s not just about repetitive manual labor anymore; it’s about cognition, decision-making, and even creativity.
Tools like ChatGPT are writing copy and answering customer queries. Image generators are replacing commercial illustrators. AI composers are challenging the role of musicians. In many cases, these tools are faster, cheaper, and—controversially—“good enough.”
